best iPad apps in the classroom for 3rd & 4th grade?
« on: April 10, 2012, 01:35:50 PM »

Hi, all. I'm working with some local schools to compile a list of the best iPad apps for 3rd & 4th graders. I'd love to hear input from any teachers in this forum.

So far I have:
Splash Math: 4th Grade Math
Operation Math

What apps would you add to this list?

Thanks, Lorraine. I'm especially interested in the types of apps you listed–i.e., assessment apps, as opposed to content creation apps.

Anyone else care to share?

Apart from my own apps, 'Tap Times Tables' and 'Math Plus Minus' there is also 'Compare a Twist' from appofapproval.us which is directly aimed at classroom use in that it provides the teacher with the tools to create lessons, share them online, and encourage the kids to take the lessons either in class or at home on their iPads.

I should own up that I was involved in the development of 'Compare a Twist' but I really think its a great idea and it's just the first of a suite of apps to come from appofapproval.

Jumbline 2 is an anagram word game. It's great for spelling and vocab. Let us know what you think.

Here's a teachers take on using it in her classroom.

After trying Jumbline 2 myself, and sharing it with my middle school and high school children, I brought it into my second grade classroom. Those of us 12 and older all enjoyed the games and found them quite challenging. I could feel myself getting smarter by the minute and at the same time I felt successful, despite some frustration at not knowing all the answers. In the classroom I was looking for an app that could replace or compliment the paper Make a Word activities we do. The classic game in Jumbline 2 is similar to Make a Word—take the given letters and make words of different lengths. Make a Word is designed specifically for the elementary school classroom and the words are based on an elementary school vocabulary. Jumbline 2 is geared for a wider audience, and much of the vocabulary was too challenging for the class. However, they did really enjoy the dictionary feature, a great touch. Everyone loved the Star Tower game, both on the iPad and on the iTouch. Students played in pairs on the iPad, and individually on the iTouch, both worked well. Having the directions pop up before the game starts is fantastic—no need for students to hunt around for the little icon that will lead them to the help section.  Most of them stuck with creating 3-5 letter words and that worked for them, they were able to keep ahead of the moving yellow line for 5-6 blocks and then they were happy to start a new game.  Pairs also played Cloud Pop, and enjoyed collaborating and helping each other out. With no prompting they took turns with passing clouds. As with Star Tower they were successful with the initial shorter words, guessed as the words grew longer, and didn’t feel disappointment when the game ended, they just started right up again. It was easy and automatic for students of different abilities to remain challenged while working with a student of a different spelling ability. We will definitely be playing more Jumbline 2 to increase spelling ability, phonics skills, problem solving, and cooperation.

Brush of Truth is an interactive storybook app for kids 8-12. Written in second person, “your” voice, you choose how the action unfolds at critical points during the plot. Reach an ending, go back and make different choices to explore a new path. Created by Story Bayou, a mom’s venture to get tweens to read, Brush of Truth is about two kids who find an enchanted paintbrush. It has 65 decision points and 20 possible endings.

Place Value from the Ground Up (http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/isbn9781938291012) is an interactive multitouch textbook that I wrote using iBooks Author. It is loosely based on a set of lessons I developed when working with a small group of third graders who had major gaps in their understanding of place value concepts and were falling further and further behind in class.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to really field test this textbook, so I'd love to hear feedback from kids and teachers.

Innovative Mobile Systems has developed a Math App for 3rd grade and is available on all app stores
iTunes Appstore Link    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/math-prep-3rd-grade/id506760778?ls=1&mt=8
Google Appstore   https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.innomobile.mathprepgrade3
Amazon Appstore   http://www.amazon.com/Math-Test-Prep-3rd-Grade/dp/B007K8K5IC

Math Test Prep – 3rd Grade is a Math App to review key concepts and take practice tests. It uses adaptive learning technology to make sure the questions are tailored to your student’s actual progress. As soon as your student masters the basic concepts in a given topic, the application adjusts the questions to focus on increasingly higher level concepts in that topic. To encourage kids to continue, they earn badges as they master key concepts in a given topic.
The app allows the parent/coach to enable only certain topics so that the quiz can be focused on only those topics. This allows the parent/coach to fine tune the quiz to the needed areas. The application keeps track of all the quizzes taken and provides a detailed analysis of how many questions from each topic were answered correctly. By focusing efforts and making sure the student has mastered each topic, the parent/coach can ensure a solid math foundation for the student.

We will be releasing apps for other grades over the next several months.

We have received very good feedback about the app and many teachers/kids have benefited from using this app.

Thanks

Hi,
A lot of 3rd and 4th teachers have adopted VocabularySpellingCity.com since it allows them to have automated spelling and vocabulary practice with any list with minimal set-up. Also, it's free.  The teacher or school only pays if they want the automated record-keeping too.  Plus there's learning games and activities (writing practice and grammar too) to use with these lists.  25 of them (half are free, half are for paid members).  Around 7% of the classrooms in the country have been using VocabSpellingCity in the 2011-12 school year.

This year, it's also available on the Ipad & Iphone. Still free.
I'd recommend it as the most generally useful app for 3rd & 4th graders. Of course, I am biased, I'm the Mayor of  VocabularySpellingCity (ie founder).
Try it: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/spellingcity/id538407602?ls=1&mt=8

I thought I would update this post of mine with some more objective data on the VocabularySpellingCity Ipad app. We've been a top 10 educational app by download almost every week since we launched it almost two months ago.  We have over 150,000 downloads. It seems that almost all of our users are in schools since we've done no consumer marketing yet (since it's free).  We will be launching a much improved version *soon* with more materials and features.  Droid too.  For more info on the SpellingCity app. http://www.spellingcity.com/app/
